More places!

I’ve been accumulating lots of new additions – working on getting the gazetteer up to speed and updated with our new layout! Here’s some of the stuff I’ve added:

It looks like I’ll be heading to Toronto as well, but not until later – so keep on the lookout for more updates over the next couple days. :)

    You know, John.

By now we know several Gringotts employees.
Would you consider adding a list of those?

  • jensenly

I am off to read the Bagshot house entry……it was so creepy in the book! Thanks, John.

  • TimS

I notice on the “Breakins” section of the Gringott’s page, it says that when Quirrell broke in on July 31, 1991, he was possessed by Voldemort. But isn’t this wrong? Quirrell was able to shake hands with Harry in the Leaky Cauldron earlier that day because he wasn’t yet possessed by Voldemort.

I’ve been hugely enjoying all the updates the last couple of weeks. Many thanks!

  • gem

sorry to be pedantic, but I thought you’d like to know that theres a slight error on the Albania page

He hunted it down and, killing an Albanian peasant (chat), turned the into a horcrux

I think theres a word missing, perhaps diadem, between the and into.

    Hope this helps

I think, it´s now obvious, how Sirius Black had taken money from his own vault for Harrys Firebolt without given himself away.

He sneaked into Gringotts in his Animagus form and as no other wizard was around there, he transformed back to his human form and demanded his money.

As we see in DH24 and DH26, goblins have appearantly little interest in wizards business and they wouldn´t have turned Sirius in.

  • txag

I am so glad y’all are getting everything updated. I can’t wait till y’all update all the new spells from DH.

  • Suzanne

These are all great! I love your updates and compulsively check it a couple times a day. Just as a side note, you have a typo in the Hogs Head page, unless the head is really leaking “blook” all over the white sheet. If that is a case, could we get a definition? Just teasing . . . Wonderful updates and I’m looking forward to more.

  • Bryan

Good job on all the updates. The new stuff is really fun to peruse, and there is a lot of new stuff that you aren’t announcing here but is just showing up on the site.

I had a “strictly british” question. Snape has “done a bunk”… can someone explain that from a UK perspective?

(I can gather what it means… however it’s similiar to “snogging” where as speaker of American English, the connotations just zip way over my head).

I’m sorry my comment is a little off topic.

  • Krabat

TimS really discovered a mistake! quirrel couldn’t have been able to shake hands with harry in the leaky cauldron! he would have burned his fingers! quirrel was possessed since he got back from the black forest in albania!
“p-p-potter,” stammered professor quirrel, grasping harry’s hands, “c-can’t t-tell you how p-pleased i am to meet you.”

  • Jayni D.

Krabat, Voldemort was NOT possessing Quirrel when he met Harry in the Leaky Cauldron. In the Chapter entitled ‘The Sorting Hat’, when Harry looks up at the teachers’ table – “Harry spotted Professor Quirrell, too, the nervous young man from the Leaky Cauldron. He was looking very peculiar in a large purple turban.” If Quirrel had been wearing the turban (which covered Voldemort’s face) in the Leaky Cauldron, I believe it would have been mentioned there. The way it is mentioned in the later chapter shows that the turban is something different about Quirrel which Harry notices. This is on page 91 of the Canadian version, which I think is the same as the UK version.

Voldemort could have begun possessing Quirrel AFTER he met Harry in the Leaky Cauldron and BEFORE Quirrel attempted to rob the vault in Gringotts, since by then, Harry had left Diagon Alley.

  • Rondee

    Adding to Jayni D. comments.
In the movie version shows Quirrel with turban on while at The Leaky Cauldron. THIS is why lots of people get confuse about when Quirrel was taking over by Voldemort.

  • Krabat

i don’t care about the movie anyway because i hate them! but how could voldemort possess quirrel after he was already back from albania?? in the end of the goblet of fire voldemort says that he met a young foolish wizard in the forest where he was hiding! this was obviously quirrel! he took control over his body and came back to britain! perhaps the turban is not mentioned in the scene in the leaky cauldron but quirrel is already stuttering! for me this is a sign of being obsessed!

  • TimS

Krabat, Voldemort didn’t move onto the back of Quirrell’s head until after Quirrell failed to steal the Philosopher’s Stone from Gringott’s. When Quirrell shook Harry’s hand in the Leaky Cauldron, and when he broke into Gringott’s, he was not possessed, although he was working for Voldemort.

  • John

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I’ve made the tweaks that you mentioned – sorry for the typos. ;)

Krabat and others who were wondering – Quirrell brought Voldemort back from Albania but was not possessed the day he met Harry in the Leaky Cauldron (as several of you pointed out, this is different in the movie). Two quick quotes I found on this:

Quirrell tells Harry, “When I failed to steal the stone from Gringotts, he was most displeased. He punished me… decided he would have to keep a closer watch on me…” (PS17)

Voldemort, in GF33: “…he brought me back to this country, and after a while, I took possession of his body.” (GF33)

Also, most tellingly, Quirrell is not wearing the turban when Harry first meets him in PS5, but once he reaches Hogwarts “Harry spotted Professor Quirrell, too, the nervous young man from the Leaky Cauldron. He was looking very peculiar in a large purple turban.”

    Hope that helps!

    John

  • John

John, you are doing an excellent job, does the gazetteer have anything for the Potter’s house? If so, please tell me, if not, please add some.

  • Krabat

if voldemort didn’t possess quirrel in the leaky cauldron but forced him to do what he wanted voldemort had to be in london as well! if he didn’t possess someone’s body it would have been very dangerous to him to show up in london in his ghost like form!

  • Krabat

but okay you finally convinced me!

  • kamion

slightly confusing about Quirrel is that in the movie he is wearing the tirban already in the Leaky Cauldron and fumbles nervous with his hands without shaking hands with Harry.

These images of uber-fanon keep creeping on ones memory of the canon.

  • Insel

It is possible he was nervous because he was going to break into the safest bank in the world?

  • Alex

Bryan, it means to have left when you weren’t supposed to, or something to that affect. The most common uses over here in England (as far as I’m away) is skipping school. You’re said to have “done a bunk” or more commonly to be “bunking”.

  • Remi

Great job with the pages – I am so impressed!
Can I make couple of suggestions?
    - In the GRINGOTTS page in the Vaults section: maybe specifically mention that the Lestrange’s vault had Gemino and Flagrante curses in addition to the Dragon & needing a Goblin palm to open the vault? This just emphasizes the higher security.
    - Alos on the GRINGOTT’S page: In the Security “times of war” sub-section: perhaps make a distinction between security when Gringotts is under exclusive control of Goblins (like in HBP) and when it no longer is (in DH). For e.g. when poor ol’ “Arkie Philpott got a Probity Probe stuck of his …” GOBLINS were using the Probes; Wizards didn’t replace Goblins at the entrance till DH.
    - On the HOG’S HEAD page, in the May ’98 section: Perhaps add a line about Death Eater’s using the place to traffick potions and poisons as a sideline (p. 558 DH US version)?
    Hope this helps :)

  • Scae

    Great work yet again!
I only have one remark. On the Hog’s Head page in the third paragraph of Clientele Quirrel is spelt as Qurrel, but that’s the only thing I spotted. Again, great work!

  • Gina

The ‘About the film’ pages seem to have disappeared. Maybe the links are bad.

  • Haltiamieli

About Arkie Alderton’s Kwik-Repair Shop it might be worth mentioning that Famous Wizard Cards include one medieval Archibald Alderton. An ancestor and namesake of Kwik-Repair Shop’s Arkie?

  • Phil

Actually Arkie Alderton is mentioned himself in DH13 (UK edition p212). One of the supposed Muggle-borns on trial claims him as a father and says he is a well-known broomstick designer.

  • Reader2

Well, Alkie might be descended from Archibald.
JKR seems to be reusing last names in this manner rather often.

  • FelixFelicis

On the Gringotts page, I always thought that the group of wizards which were there when Harry & Hermione were escaping, were some of the new wizard employees mentioned by Griphook.
He says they were meddling, so maybe they were there for the Ministry for extra protection over the Horcrux (unbeknownst to them).

    Thank you for these updates.
