Everything you ever wanted to know about: Brooms

Monday, October 30th, 2006

I’ve been taking a break from my big project, working on fixing broken links and minor errors and so forth. Then last night, Belinda and I started chatting about some of the Lexicon’s “forgotten” pages, that don’t really have a section and so are in a bit of disrepair, and thinking we might take a whirl at fixing them up when we get time.

So, after three hours of gutting and recreating a page, I’ve got my first one done: Brooms. As always, I’d love to hear about it if there’s information you feel is missing or incorrect!

Happy Birthday Molly Weasley!

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

The WotM calendar on Jo’s official site is displaying Happy Birthday wishes to Molly Weasley for October 30.

Do wizards have restaurants?

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

About a week ago I was studying through the first few chapters of PS and realized that I hadn’t done justice to the Muggle zoo, having ignored the reptile house and zoo restaurant despite writing an entry for every other building in the books. So I went ahead and added them to the Gazetteer.

And then I got to thinking. We’ve seen two Muggle restaurants (the one in the zoo and the hamburger restaurant in Paddington Station), but I couldn’t remember ever seeing a Wizarding restaurant. Sure they have pubs, like the Leaky Cauldron, but do they ever eat food in them? And why isn’t there a full-fledged restaurant? So of course I had to find out. Turns out, yes! Harry eats both in the Leaky Cauldron and in cafes in Diagon Alley in PA4. So then I had to go add cafes to the Diagon Alley page.

So I did that, and in doing so realized that the Diagon Alley page was annoyingly dense and difficult to read. So I went ahead and reformatted that, too.

This is why it’s dangerous for me to start editing things.

10 new character pages

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

I know that the character A to Z lists are very very long and I have been meaning for a while to give certain characters their own pages so that their A to Z list entry can be shortened.

So here goes: Lavender Brown, Seamus Finnegan, Ernie Macmillan, Griselda Marchbanks, Olympe Maxime, Parvati and Padma Patil, Pansy Parkinson, Madam Rosmerta, Newt Scamander, and Dean Thomas. There isn’t much new content, but I have added movie stills and artwork by Marta T., Sebastian Theilig, Tealin Raintree and Laura Freeman.

New artwork by Laura Freeman

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

Fans of Laura Freeman’s artwork know of her special project of Harry Potter Tarot cards. The Lexicon has just received special permission to reproduce some of these on our pages. Images of Umbridge, Lupin, Hermione, Luna, Hagrid and the Weasleys have now been uploaded! Really nice work, Laura! See also Laura’s artist page.

Horrors! Greyback gets his own page on the Lexicon

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

Just in time for Hallowe’en! Fenrir Greyback, one of Rowling’s most horrific characters, now has his own page on the Lexicon. Warning: the page displays Makani’s portrait of Greyback, which is enough to give anyone nightmares.

Happy Birthday, Prof. Flitwick!

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Jo’s site is now showing Happy Birthday wishes to Filius Flitwick for 17 October on the WotM calendar.

When this initially appeared in 2004 it was our first confirmation of his full name, one of the questions on the Lexicon’s Open Letter to Jo.

New essay on the Fidelius Charm

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

I’ve posted a new essay discussing how the Fidelius Charm works by Anna L. Black, a past contributor to the Lexicon’s Magical Beings and Named Beasts pages. Enjoy!

New Red Scharlach artwork!

Monday, October 9th, 2006

I just uploaded two cool new drawings by Red Scharlach, one of Mrs. Figg and the other of Mundungus Fletcher.

I love how she drew Fletcher so that it looks like he is standing a little too close to you. Phew. And Mrs Figg is in her bedroom slippers looking a bit forlorn, like a wizarding Eleanor Rigby. Check them out!

New WOMBATs Results page

Friday, October 6th, 2006

The test results have been delivered to those who sat the WOMBAT Grade 2 exam.
But if you’re like me, you might be wondering what the “other” results looked like.
So for the benefit of the curious and also the folks unable to take the exam, I’ve created a page showing the many certificates and letters from both WOMBAT Grade 1 and Grade 2. You can see them here:
WOMBAT tests- Results (note that a few images are still to come)

We’ve also created new threads in the Lexicon Forums for discussion of the WOMBATS! Have a look here:
WOMBAT Grade 2 questions and commentary
WOMBAT Grade 1 questions and commentary
WOMBAT tests – general discussion
