January- February 2007

Our Cryptic Clues creator Mike Weinstein returns this month with a different type of puzzle for us!

**************************************
Voldemort's Horcruxes = ?
Grindelwald's defeat = ?
Snitch's worth = ?
Sir Nicholas's death = ?
Philospher's Stone's vault = ?

Book Seven's progress:
O U B V T X Q I O K J N V O J
**************************************

To solve the code:

Voldemort's Horcruxes = 6
Grindelwald's defeat = 1945
Snitch's worth = 150
Sir Nicholas's death = 1492
Philosopher's Stone's vault = 713

1) Write the five numbers in order below the letters, one digit to each letter.
2) Shift each code letter backwards in the alphabet by its corresponding digit.  (The letter "before" A is Z.)  So six letters before O is I, one letter before U is T, nine letters "before" B is S, et cetera.

Book Seven's progress:
O U B V T X Q I O K J N V O J
6 1 9 4 5 1 5 0 1 4 9 2 7 1 3
I T S R O W L I N G A L O N G

Answer: IT'S ROWLING ALONG!

December 2006

This month's puzzle was submitted by Ellen Smyth aka Ginevra Potter, and takes the form of a poem with multiple parts.  Decipher the clues from each verse to solve the puzzle.

Potter fans:  come one, come all
Pick up your little graphite sword
Help Harry meet his greatest call
To forever vanquish this Dark Lord

Strong and swift, with locks cut nigh
She taught him how to fly and fly
HOOCH

A phantom, a foe, caught in the middle
Of this most perplexing riddle
MARVOLO

Search the sky; read the signs
Man and beast so well combined
CENTAUR

Sounds like a wolf, bumbles like a bee
Magic art upon his knee
WULFRIC

Nearly nicking the world's biggest prize
He drops so swiftly from the skies
VIKTOR

When your friends are less than true
Give them a dose of who no poo?
U

Ashes to ashes, and dust to dust
Out from which comes the most robust
PHOENIX

Dark and green, with hair that flows
She screams a scream to curl your toes
BANSHEE

Otter and swan and dog and stag
Cheer me when I start to sag
PATRONUS

A few more hints to get you through
Apply each number to each clue:

First five, then seven – repeated thrice,
Then six, then one, and seven twice
These are the number of letters in each clue.

And finally, the ninth has eight
Not quite the end, so wait, wait, wait!
Everything and all relate

A final clue lies in these nine
At the end of the end
When all combine.
Take the last letter of each of the nine clues.
HORCRUXES
