1. The Riddle House
Chapter 1 summary

Chapter 1 - "The Riddle House" - In which we learn of the mysterious murders in the [Riddle House] fifty years ago, how [Frank Bryce] was accused but released for lack of evidence, and how the [Riddle House] fell into disrepair. In the present, Frank interrupts a sinister meeting and is killed when he overhears [Voldemort]'s plans.

GF: chapter 1, pp. 1-4

We learn about the village of [Little Hangleton] and the old, abandoned [Riddle House]. It was there that, fifty years ago, all three of the [Riddles] were killed, and though gardener [Frank Bryce] was blamed by many villagers, he was eventually set free by the police when the autopsy revealed the family had not been murdered.

The Murder of Frank Bryce

GF: chapter 1, pp. 4-7

One night fifty years later, [Frank Bryce] is still the gardener at the [Riddle House], and seeing lights on in the house at night, he enters the building and climbs the stairs, creeping up to the room unheard.

GF: chapter 1, pp. 7-15

With [Frank Bryce] listening outside, [Voldemort] and [Wormtail] converse about having killed [Bertha Jorkins], using [Harry Potter] for something, and plotting another murder. Soon, though, a [snake] slithers by, and Voldemort and Wormtail confront Frank, barely listening to his accusations before killing him too, awakening Harry many miles away.

2. The Scar

Chapter 2 summary

Chapter 2 - "The Scar" - In which Harry awakens from a bad dream, his scar burning, we recap Harry's previous adventures, and he writes a letter to his godfather.

GF: chapter 2, pp. 16-22

[Harry] awakens suddenly, still thinking about his vision of [Voldemort] and [Wormtail] and wondering who he can tell about his [scar] hurting. Meanwhile, we learn of Harry's life, his love of [Quidditch], and of his having to live with the [Dursleys]. Finally, Harry realizes the solution to his dilemma, deciding to write to his godfather, [Sirius Black].

GF: chapter 2, pp. 22-25

[Harry] pens a letter to [Sirius] about his [scar], as we learn of Sirius's backstory and the way in which he came into Harry's life the previous year. Finally, Harry finishes writing, and heads down to breakfast.

3. The Invitation
Chapter 3 summary

Chapter 3 - "The Invitation" - In which Dudley and the rest of the Dursleys are on a diet, and the Dursleys receive a letter from Mrs. Weasley inviting Harry to stay with her family and attend the Quidditch World Cup final.

GF: chapter 3, pp. 26-29

At breakfast [Harry] finds the [Dursleys] in a quiet, sulky mood, owing largely to the new diet imposed on [Dudley] by his school nurse. As they eat breakfast, the doorbell rings, and [Vernon] answers it; shortly thereafter he orders a confused Harry out into the living room with him.

GF: chapter 3, pp. 29-34

[Uncle Vernon] presents a bewildered [Harry] with a letter he received from [Mrs. Weasley], inviting him to the [Quidditch World Cup], and absolutely covered with stamps. Finally, under Harry's threat of writing to [Sirius], Vernon hesitantly agrees to let Harry go to the World Cup with the [Weasleys].
