I have been working on and off to update the page that collects quotes by and about Snape, and it is finally finished. Whew.

  • WOW, this is amazing!!! I LOOOOVE it! I like the quotes of Harry and Ron about him in CoS – so funny.

In James’ profile it says that James’ year of birth is either 1958 or 1959. But according to Lupin, after Harry had entered Snape’s Worst Memory, (Lupin: “I wouldn’t want you to judge your father on what you saw there, Harry. He was only fifteen –“) James’ year of birth MUST be 1959, since OWLs take place in June. Must it not?

Lisa Marie, There are several factors that need to be taken into account when figuring James’s age; Steve’s explanation page is here: http://www.hp-lexicon.org/about/exp-ages.html

There is one more bit of info you can add to Snape’s page, the book did mention his maternal grandparents.
Not much, but at least something.

Just wondering how you actually get all quotes – do you do it all manually, or do you scan the book in, and then run a search for things in “” that are close approximity to snape, severus or potions

Reader2, just wondering…where does it mention Snape’s maternal grandparents? I must have missed something.

I am reffering to the article about Eileen’s marriage.
It is mentioned that her parents (and they would be Snape’s grandparents) did not approve of her marrying a muggle.
Like I said, it’s not much, but it’s enough to conclude that Snbape’s grandparent were wizards, and most likely old-facioned pure-blood wizards, but not as prejudistic as some other wizards we know, since they allowed the article to be publsihed.

    Very interresting!!!!!!!!

In my book there is no mention of Snapes maternal grandparents. I have the UK edition, purchased on day of release in Germany. Maybe there is more in the US edition or any newer edition.

Reader2, I have thumbed back and forth and I cannot find the passage you mention. There is the first time Hermione finds Eileen’s name and the second time when she finds the article that mentions her marriage. Neither one refers to Eileen or Tobias’s parents.

Rachel, I use British editions of the books with lots of post-it tabs on them. Sometimes I just can’t find a passage I remember and I will use the internet to help me find it. Occasionally I will cut and paste a quote I find but I always correct it to match the British edition before I post it. Some of the early portions of the book quotes pages *are* from the American editions — they date to before the Lexicon decided to make the British editions the preferred ones.
