Tom Riddle commits his first murders: his father and grandparents in their Little Hangleton mansion

"Meanwhile, in the village of Little Hangleton, a maid was running along the High Street, screaming that there were three bodies lying in the drawing room of the big house: Tom Riddle Senior and his mother and father ... The Ministry ... knew at once that this was a wizard's murder. They also knew that a convicted Muggle-hater lived across the valley from the Riddle house, a Muggle-hater who had already been imprisoned once for attacking one of the murdered people."
-- Albus Dumbledore (HBP17)

Tom Riddle commits his first murders: his father and grandparents in their Little Hangleton mansion

He first visits his uncle, Morfin Gaunt, and uses magic to steal Marvolo’s ring and frame Morfin for the murders of the Muggles in the Riddle house. Tom uses the murders to create his first Horcrux, the diary. The next day, Morfin is taken to Azkaban, where he remains until his death.

Timeline Notes

Tom Marvolo Riddle was born in the last hours of 1926. His first year was 1927, his second year was 1928. Counting on in this way, we discover that his sixteenth year was 1942, which is when these murders occurred:

"In the summer of his sixteenth year, he left the orphanage to which he returned annually and set off to find his Gaunt relatives."

  • Tom Riddle Sr. was killed in the summer of 1942, not 1943. There is a lot of debate about this, but canon states that it was during Tom Riddle’s “sixteenth year,” which is 1942, not “the year he was sixteen years old,” which would be 1943.

Rowling herself listed how each Horcrux was created in her Bloomsbury Live Chat after book seven:

Q: Whose murders did Voldemort use to create each of the Horcruxes?
J.K. Rowling: The diary – Moaning Myrtle. The cup – Hepzibah Smith, the previous owner. The locket – a Muggle tramp. Nagini – Bertha Jorkins (Voldemort could use a wand once he regained a rudimentary body, as long as the victim was subdued). The diadem – an Albanian peasant. The ring – Tom Riddle Sr. (BLC)

  • As I mentioned in my reply to your other comment, Riddle killed his paternal family in July-August 1942, so he had the ring on his finger during the next school year, which is when he brought up the subject of multiple Horcruxes with Slughorn. He then killed Myrtle in June of 1943 to create his second Horcrux. I’ve edited that entry to correct the error.

Okay but the year he killed Tom Riddle Sr. is still wrong. If you see my earlier reply, you can type into Google and see TRS’s death year was 1943.

Let’s take it a step further . . . Voldemort was born December 31st, 1926, correct? And let’s just say that he killed his father on July 5th, 1942. Calculating that, Voldemort would have only been 15 years, 7 months, and 5 days old. 1942 would still be his 15th year.

      • Canon states that Tom Riddle Jr. killed his father and his grandparents in his sixteenth year. In his sixteenth year means that he was 15 years old. Think about it. His first year was from when he was born until he was 1 year old. His second year was from when he was one until he was two. That’s literally what that means. Tom Riddle Jr.’s sixteenth year was NOT when he was 16, but when he was 15. Many, many fans and fan sites have the date wrong. According to canon, the murders occurred in 1942, regardless of what you may read on any other site.
