Etymology

"antipodean" = an inhabitant of Australia or New Zealand, from "anti" = opposite + "pod" = fooot, literally someone whose feet are against another's feet. Comes from the fact that Australia and New Zealand are on the opposite side of the Earth from Britain.

"opal" = a white or clear semi-precious stone which shimmers with iridescent colors + "eye", a reference to the appearance of the creature's glittery, multicolored eyes.
