On Harry’s first day of class, he receives the Half-Blood Prince’s old Potions book

Snape tries to jinx Harry in Defence Against the Dark Arts, but he excels in Potions and wins a bottle of Felix Felicis. Harry owes his success to the old copy of Advanced Potion-Making from Slughorn’s cupboard, inscribed with the name “The Half-Blood Prince,” which was edited by a past student to improve all the potions recipes (HBP9).

Timeline Notes

The date for the first day of school is never given in this book, but we know from previous books that the Hogwarts Express has every year left for start of term on September 1, so this is probably a safe assumption.
