Divination

Fire Omens

"In the second term, we shall progress to the crystal ball -- if we have finished with fire omens, that is. Unfortunately, classes will be disrupted in February by a nasty bout of flu."
-- Professor Trelawney (PA6)

Divination using fire.

  • Taught in the spring term of third year, after the crystal ball (PA6)
  • In the fifth year, Firenze burned sage and mallowsweet and told the children to look for shapes in the "pungent fumes" but it is unknown if that is what Trelawney meant as fire omens (OP27)

Notes

The art of fire divination is also known as Pyromancy, from the Greek pyros, “fire,” and manteia, “divination."  It was done in ancient times by burning plants, the bones of animals, salt, or straw and interpreting the results. source: Wikipedia
