Doxycide

"Suffice it to say that even hermits suffer from household pests. Hence I created this, a full-bodied venomous mixture, yet well-rounded."
-- Zygmunt Budge (BoP)

Doxycide

Doxycide is a black liquid, usually delivered by spray bottle, used to knock out Doxies so that they can be safely disposed of. The effects last quite a long time. Doxycide is commercially sold with the instructions for use printed on the side of the bottle, considering how Mrs. Weasley described the process:

“When I say the word, start spraying immediately … They’ll come flying out at us, I expect, but it says on the sprays one good squirt will paralyze them. When they’re immobilized, just throw them in this bucket” (OP6).

History and Notes

Doxycide was invented by potioneer Zygmunt Budge in the 16th century when the Doxys descended upon his island home of Hermetray. His first attempt was a potion that caused the Doxys to catch fire and shoot through the air like "furious, red-hot, hairy coals" and unfortunately burning up many of his potion scrolls. He fled into the sea, spending the night breathing through a straw. The following year, he perfected the present-day Doxycide potion (BoP).

References from the canon

Molly Weasley provided each of the children a spray bottle of Doxycide with which to help clear the infestation of Doxies from the draperies of the drawing room in number twelve, Grimmauld Place (OP6).

Commentary

Notes

The name is something of a misnomer since the suffix "-cide" means "killing" or "killer of"  (e.g., pesticide) and this potion only paralyzes its targets.
