Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Chapter Thirty-Four:
The Forest Again

I open at the close.

Notes by Michele L. Worley
Page editor Belinda Hobbs

U.S. hardcover edition: pages 691 - 704
U.K. hardcover edition: pages 554 - 564
Timeframe: ?+1 May, 1998

In which Harry, having learned that he himself was turned into a Horcrux when Voldemort killed his parents, goes to keep his appointment with Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Along the way, he makes sure that Neville knows about Nagini, then retrieves the Resurrection Stone from the Snitch and uses it. Upon reaching Aragog's web, where the Death Eaters are now camped, he permits Voldemort to use the Killing Curse on him without attempting to defend himself.

Interesting facts and notes about the text of this chapter:

Ron vomiting slugs

See (CS7).

Hermione helping him save Norbert

See (PS14) - Ron, of course, wasn't there, because he was still in the Hospital Wing, recovering from having been bitten. (This is one part of the story that PS/f took liberties with.)

"You'll stay with me?"

This whole sequence puts me in mind of Aslan's walk through the woods with Lucy and Susan to the Stone Table in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, down to the point where his companions are never seen by those he is to meet at journey's end.

If Bellatrix rather than Voldemort had been in charge at the camp, the similiarities between the two scenes might have been even greater, of course.
