Ministry of Magic

Departments

There are seven departments in the Ministry, with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement being the largest and all others more or less answering to it (except the Department of Mysteries) (FB).

Each Department has a level of Ministry Headquarters assigned to it, although Law Enforcement has not only level two but also the courtrooms of level ten (OP7).
Several departments are mentioned in early canon which do not fit the hierarchy of the Ministry as detailed in later books. Possibly they went through a reorganization early in Fudge's administration.

Department of Magical Games and Sports

Head: Bagman, Ludo

1995 [Y15]

Other Personnel:

Main Offices: level seven of Ministry of Magic Headquarters (OP7)

Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes
(a.k.a. Department of Magical Catastrophes)

Head: unknown

Other Personnel:

Main Offices: level three of Ministry of Magic Headquarters (OP7)
  • Accidental Magic Reversal Squad
also referred to as the Accidental Magic Reversal Department in earlier editions of the book

  • Invisibility Task Force
Although not specifically stated as being in this department, it seems logical, since this group casts various forms of invisibility magic to hide magical places and creatures from Muggle eyes (DP).

  • Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee

  • Obliviator Headquarters

Department of International Magical Cooperation

Head: Barty Crouch senior (until 1995 [Y15])

Other Personnel:

Main Offices: level five of Ministry of Magic Headquarters (OP7)
  • work with magical governments of other countries

  • sets standards for trade

  • creates regulations for things like cauldron thickness

  • worked with Department of Magical Games and Sports on the Triwizard Tournament

  • International Confederation of Wizards, British Seats

  • International Magical Office of Law

  • International Magical Trading Standards Body

Department of Magical Law Enforcement

Head: Amelia Bones until July 1996 [Y16]

Other Personnel:

Main Offices: level two of Ministry of Magic Headquarters (OP7)

Aurors

Improper Use of Magic Office

Magical Law Enforcement Squad
  • employs Hit Wizards to handle dangerous criminals such as Sirius Black (PA11)

    • Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office
      • keeps enchanted items out of the hands of Muggles

      • participates in raids to keep Dark Magic items out of circulation

Office for the Detection and Confiscation of
Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects
Head: Arthur Weasley with a staff of ten

office created by incoming Minister of Magic Scrimgeour July 1996 [Y16] in response to the influx of counterfeit objects begin sold to supposedly protect people

      Wizengamot and Wizengamot Administration Services
      Council of Magical Law
The high Wizard court of law, held in a dungeon; the accused is magically bound to a chair in the center of the room. A jury sits on the right of the prosecutor who states the case against the accused and eventually asks for a verdict. The courtrooms are located on the tenth level of the Ministry of Magic; during the Voldemort years, prisoners are escorted and guarded by groups of Dementors (GF30). The members of the Wizengamot, of which there are about fifty, wear plum-covered robes with elaborate silver initials on them (the letter 'W').
      Magical Equipment Control
      • issued a warning about substandard wands being sold by a street peddler named "Honest Willy" Wagstaff (DP)

      • the department is uncertain, especially since this group is called the Department of Magical Equipment Control, a misnomer no doubt resulting from the fact that this was written in 1998, three years before FB (which for the first time listed the various departments of the Ministry of Magic). A similar error occurs in the books themselves, where a Accidental Magic Reversal Department is mentioned, although no such department exists (DP).

      Department of Magical Transportation (GF6)

      Head: unknown

      Other Personnel:

      • Basil, worked the Portkey terminus for the World Cup (GF7)

      • Madam Edgecombe, Floo Regulation

Main Offices: level six of Ministry of Magic Headquarters (OP7)

Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (GF6, FB)

      Head: unknown

      Other Personnel:

      • Bob (who was carrying the fire-breathing chicken) (OP7)

      • Dirk Cresswell (HBP4)

      • Amos Diggory (GF9).

      • Cuthbert Mockridge (GF7)

      • Newt Scamander, 1915 - (FB)

Main Offices: level four of Ministry of Magic Headquarters (OP7)

      Department of Mysteries

      Head: unknown

      Other Personnel:

      • Bode "Unspeakable" (GF7) (deceased January 1996 [Y16] (OP25)

      • Croaker: "Unspeakable" (GF7)

      • Augustus Rookwood: spied for Voldemort (c. 1980 Y0) (GF30)

Main Offices: level nine of Ministry of Magic Headquarters (OP7)
      • corridor: bare walls, no windows or doors except a plain black door set at the end of the corridor (OP7)

      • opening at the end of the corridor near the door, opens to the left, down a flight of steps to the Wizengamot court chamber (OP7, OP8)

      Miscellaneous Committees etc.
for which we don't know the department

      Committee On Experimental Charms
      Personnel: Gilbert Wimple (CS3, GF7)
Founded by Balfour Blane, who lived in the late 1500s-early 1600s.

      Wizarding Examinations Authority
Personnel: headed by Griselda Marchbanks, includes Professor Tofty
Not sure if this is actually a Ministry organization, but since the Ministry clearly holds authority over Hogwarts it seems likely that this body is part of the Ministry of Magic. They administer the O.W.L. and N.E.W.T exams for students which are given in June every year. Members travel to Hogwarts and test individual students for the practical examinations. The theory portion of the O.W.L. test is proctored by Hogwarts staff members (Flitwick administered the Defence Against the Dark Arts exam twenty years ago, while McGonagall proctored the Charms O.W.L. for Harry's class).
