The Harry Potter Canon

First-year students are required to buy a pair of thick protective gloves (dragon hide or similar) (PS5). Gloves are a covering for the hand worn for protection against cold or dirt and typically having separate parts for each finger and the thumb.

The gloves have a protective function, for example when dealing with Bubotuber pus (GF13) or Snargaluff plants (HBP14) in Herbology or walking the Blast-Ended Skrewts in Care of Magical Creatures (GF18). When working with potions in Potions, the gloves are required as well (HBP18).

They are also used against the cold (OP19). Hagrid uses gloves from rabbit fur (PS11) for that goal.

Keepers at Quidditch have a separate set of gloves (HBP14). Ron uses the gloves from school before he recieves a pair from Harry for his 18th birthday (HBP18).

For detention, Snape lets Harry sort out Flobberworms without his gloves. This is not dangerous (Flobberworms do not have teeth) (HBP11).

The protective gloves did not protect Katie against the cursed necklace as there was a small hole in her glove (HBP13).

For the protective gloves, the skin of the Swedish Short-Snout is very suitable (FB).
